Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Somewhere between the ages of 15 and 25, wisdom teeth, also called third molars, erupt. Some people don’t experience any trouble with their wisdom teeth. For others, each wisdom tooth can cause a host of potential problems, including overcrowding, gum disease, and impaction. Wisdom teeth removal is a fairly straightforward procedure that Dr. Titensor performs at our Flower Mound, Texas dental office.
Reasons for wisdom teeth removal (extraction):
- Your jaw may not be large enough to hold your wisdom teeth, resulting in crowding or impaction.
- Your wisdom teeth may emerge partially. If this happens a flap of gum tissue will grow over the partially-erupted wisdom tooth, and bacteria can become trapped in this area and create an infection.
- Wisdom teeth can force entry at an awkward angle (backward, forward, or sideways).
- Erupted wisdom teeth are harder to clean, increasing the incidence of tooth decay and gum disease.
Before the procedure, we will administer anesthesia or sedation to ensure your comfort. Once you’re relaxed, Dr. Titensor will gently open the gums (if the wisdom tooth is impacted) and extract the wisdom tooth. After completing the wisdom teeth removal procedure, we will provide directions for caring for the treated area. Some bleeding and minor swelling is normal and can be treated with an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory. For advanced cases, Dr. Titensor may refer you to an oral surgeon with whom he works closely.
